    Hi Mike, I just got diagnosed with iron deficiency. My ferritin level was 3. I started taking supplements four weeks ago. How long does it usually take a runner to get back to their normal performance level? Thanks.

    Unfortunately, I’m not really qualified to answer that question and the answer I suspect is not straightforward. There are a number of possible causes for iron deficiency so it would depend on what’s causing it as to how long it will take for treatment to work. My own experience suggests that your performance will improve gradually, and eventually normalize, as your iron levels return to normal. I would think 4 weeks of iron supplementation should begin to show some results. Your family doctor could give you a better answer since he/she would know your history. In the meantime you might want to check out the following articles:
